A Brief History of the Kerry Park Curling Club

The Kerry Park Curling Club got its start shortly after the hockey rink opened in 1977, thanks in large part to Dennis “Red” McLain, who was the manager of the Kerry Park Recreation Centre at the time. Seeing the potential for curling in the South Cowichan area, Dennis rallied support from a group of former Navy colleagues and curlers from the Prairies. At that time, there weren’t many local curlers outside of Duncan, but the idea caught on quickly.

Even in its first half-season, the club launched with enthusiasm. There were already at least five leagues up and running, including a men’s league, Sunday night mixed, Tuesday mixed, a ladies’ league, and several daytime groups—one of the first being local farmers. By the first full season, the place was packed most nights with one or two draws, and daytime curling was nearly as busy.

Among the early leagues were the legendary “Hangover League,” started by a few curlers from Duncan, and a league organized by the local Legion. The energy, dedication, and grassroots community spirit of those early days set the tone for what would become a vibrant curling culture at Kerry Park that still continues today.

The very first Summer Bonspiel

“The very first summerspiel was held in the hockey rink. We all got stetson hats that kept falling off when you swept, the fog was so thick you could only see the skip from the hips up so it was a guess as to where the skip was holding the broom. Years later the banquet was held in the hockey rink as the lounge was just to small to host all the teams. There were many years that 48 teams entered and then there was always a waiting list. Ellen Merriam & committee for a few years hosted the chinese auction and she even one year got a car as a prize!

Teams would come from far and wide to participate: Seattle, Port Alice, Surrey, Victoria and boy did we have fun. The CVRD actually allowed camping in the upper field and part of the parking lot which really cut down on the drinking and driving! The rec centre had the support of all the local merchants and were very generous year after year with their sponsorship and prizes. Many of the sponsors were curlers. Even the rink staff were curlers and took the complaints about the ice with good humour. There were great presidents, committees with awesome ideas and enthusiasm and always the support from great volunteers. The bonspiel atmosphere was exciting. People would come early to visit and catch up on each others news, good food, great music, lots of dancing & of course drinking, people stayed after last call.

I remember a few years when we all took up a collection to get the band to play longer. At one time, there were several photo albums that would come out and people would reminisce. Lots of cards and games in the afternoon to keep everyone entertained…those sure were the good old days!”
