The Kerry Park Curling Club got its start shortly after the hockey rink opened in 1977, thanks in large part to Dennis “Red” McLain, who was the manager of the Kerry Park Recreation Centre at the time. Seeing the potential for curling in the South Cowichan area, Dennis rallied support from a group of former Navy colleagues and curlers from the Prairies. At that time, there weren’t many local curlers outside of Duncan, but the idea caught on quickly.
Even in its first half-season, the club launched with enthusiasm. There were already at least five leagues up and running, including a men’s league, Sunday night mixed, Tuesday mixed, a ladies’ league, and several daytime groups—one of the first being local farmers. By the first full season, the place was packed most nights with one or two draws, and daytime curling was nearly as busy.
Among the early leagues were the legendary “Hangover League,” started by a few curlers from Duncan, and a league organized by the local Legion. The energy, dedication, and grassroots community spirit of those early days set the tone for what would become a vibrant curling culture at Kerry Park that still continues today.
